Gray Catbirds

Gray Catbird is a well-known yard bird. This migratory bird winters in Florida's Coastal Plain. They eat insects and other insects but also fruit, hollyberries, elderberries and poison ivy. You can often find this bird on telephone wires. They nest in large numbers and feed off ground feeders during winter.

American Robins

The American Robins are known for their ability to migrate based upon where they live on Earth. They determine their geographic location by the angle of the sun, then fly accordingly. Unfortunately, only 25% of fledgling robins make it through the migration. Many adults die. There is some good news for those who wish to see robins in the wild. By watching for their migration patterns, you can watch the robins in North Carolina.


Tufted Titmouse

The Tufted Titmouse resides in eastern woodlands under 2,000 feet. They are primarily found in deciduous woodlands, but can be found in orchards as well as parks in cities. They are very similar to chickadees, and their diet includes insects, seeds, berries, and suet. Common visitor to bird feeders is the Tufted Titmouse.

Mourning Dove

The Mourning Dove from North Carolina is a common southeastern resident. This plump, small bird breeds as a flock and spends most of the winter in the south. In late winter they return home to their breeding sites where they will begin the breeding season. They eat plant matter and are able to feed at watering holes but prefer bare ground with plenty of seedlings.

American Goldfinch

The American Goldfinch is a small bird found throughout North America. They go through a spring and an autumn molt. In summer, males have brightly colored feathers. In winter, they turn olive. Their coloration varies depending on the location, but in all areas of North Carolina, they are usually found in flocks of at least 50 birds. Yellow shoulder patches are a common feature on males during the summer. American goldfinches turn grayish to tan during winter. They reproduce only one brood a year.
